Owners should be on the lookout for pain in dogs, especially if their animal is getting older. Like humans dogs become more prone to illnesses and their body starts to breakdown in old age. Pain is only a sign of some other problem that is developing inside a dog’s body, but one has to look for signs of it at the earliest possible time. Early detection will help save your dog from a lot of suffering. It can also save you the trouble and the expense of having to deal with an ailment that has deteriorated already.
As I have mentioned pain is a sign that there is something wrong with your dog’s condition, but they can not communicate with you directly about the way that they feel. Because of that you have to be ultra sensitive to the behavior of your dog. You need to be aware of the different behavioral patterns that they might undergo once they feel any pain in their body. While they can not tell you directly about the pain that they are feeling, they will give out some signs as to where the trouble spot is. A dog that is feeling pain in his stomach for example will keep on looking at its belly. It will try its best to lick or bite the abdominal area, and will refrain from leaving its spot when lying down. You may notice that the dog looks hunched over. Another indicator that your dog is feeling uncomfortable in the abdominal area is when it goes down on its fore legs, but keep its hind legs standing. This leaves the abdomen hanging and free from pressure and additional pain.
Dogs will cry, wimper, or howl loudly when a sensitive part of its body is touched. That can be a sign of both internal and external injuries. You also have to consider the breed of your dog when dealing with symptoms of pain. Some breeds have a high tolerance of pain. That means that they will not show any outward signs of how they are feeling. They will just try to keep it to themselves. This can prove to be dangerous since you might not find out their real condition until it is too late. Dogs with arthritis will show the same signs as with humans when we suffer from the same disease. There will be limping, difficulty of movement, and change of temperament.
If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, it would be best if you consult a veterinarian right away. Remember that pain is only the result of some other problem that is affecting your animal. Dealing with the pain is only secondary. Never give your dog any medication that has not been prescribed by a vet. Medicines that were formulated for human use can be harmful to animals. It will be beneficial to you and your dog to know about these things, and know how to deal with the pain that they are feeling. Remember that they are totally dependent on you.
