Beagles and other pets whether they are dogs or cats will experience some problems once they grow older. Their health will deteriorate and they will be affected by various diseases. One of the more common afflictions of old age in pets is arthritis. Just as in humans this happens when the cartilage that serves as the cushion on the joints gets worn out and starts rubbing with each other. Pain and swelling will occur when that happens. It can cause considerable pain but unfortunately beagles and other dogs have no way of directly communicating that they are experiencing pain. Pet owners therefore have to be on the watch for telltale signs of arthritis in Beagles or other dogs.
There are two types of arthritis of dog arthritis:
Osteoarthritis: This is a degenerative disease of old pets. They experience this when the cartilage tissues starts breaking down. When the canticles starts to disintegrate the bony material itself will start rubbing with each other causing intense pain and destruction of bone tissues. When the bones are the ones that are rubbing against each other there is no inflammation. Dogs that become prone to this disease as the increase pressure on the joints because of the heavier weight causes damage on the joints.
Another form of arthritis in animals is caused by the immune system of the animal attacking the cartilage tissue which will cause the bones of the joint coming in contact with each other. This is actually a very rare condition but it can happen. When your beagle starts favoring on limb, starts to limp, and sleeps more than before, then he might be suffering from arthritis. Here are some simple tips on how you can treat their condition:
1. The first thing o do would be to take your beagle to the vet to determine if they are definitely suffering from arthritis by using x-ray and other techniques.
2. Help the animal in maintaining the proper weight for their age. Buy high quality dog food for them, one that is low on fat and high on minerals and vitamins.
3. Refrain from giving your dog snacks and treats which actually contributes to their overweight condition.
4. Give them exercise regularly, this will ensure that they do not become overweight and that their joints get a workout.
5. Give them drugs that will help relieve the pain and effects of arthritis as prescribed by the veterinarian.
6. Always make sure that they get the proper amount of fluid to keep your dogs hydrated. This will ensure that their joints are lubricated.
Those are just some of the things that you ca do to treat arthritis in your beagle. Unfortunately preventive treatment is hard to do like on some other dog diseases because they can not tell us directly if there is anything that ails them. Dog diseases are just diagnosed when they are in a condition that’s too late for any prevention. That is the usual case so we have to settle for treatments that will lessen the dog’s suffering.
